Peter Darach, artist

Peter was born in Derbyshire and moved to London to study at the Royal College of Art.  His large figurative works are characterised by their intense colours and characters. He’s also written six books.

Why is artistic expression important to you?

I love going to see theatre and dance and it’s largely because it brings a different space into your world, one which doesn’t exist otherwise. When I lost access to them over lockdown I really realised how important they are. There needs to be more art taught in schools.

What inspires you?

Travelling has inspired my work.  I’ve travelled all over India to temples with the most beautiful tender carvings I’ve seen anywhere.  I collect Japanese shunga prints and they’ve had an influence. Memories are also a big inspiration.

What work are you most proud of?

There are certain paintings I’ve done - there’s one of Anne which means a lot. She’s the mother of my boys. She died when the youngest was still in nappies so I bought them up on my own.

What are you excited about doing next?

I’m painting all the time, I never stop.  I have Parkinson’s disease but can still work. I’ve also started posting to Instagram which is a new way to share and talk about work.
